1st C. Roman Glass Jarlet

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A squat jar of spherical form that is enveloped with layers of wondrous iridescence in silvery and rainbow hues. The vessel exhibits an apple-shaped body with a concave base, a gently rounded shoulder that tapers to form a wide neck, and a slightly everted rim with an in-folded lip. Jars like this would have contained various types of medicinal or cooking ingredients, perfumes, or scarce substances used for trading purposes. Size: 2.7" W x 2.5" H (6.9 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000
