2-7thC Gandhara Starving Ascetic Buddha in the form of Hardstone bracelet-Museum Piece

[ translate ]

2nd-7thC Gandharan Hardstone Bracelet with a very special Ascetic Buddha head plus two very animated snakes, a flower, plus additional ornamentation. The Buddha Head is a superb example of a rare highly sought-after type, almost certainly from the classic period of Gandharan sculpture. The stone it is carved out of looks to be an extremely hard Stone that would have been difficult to carve and finish, especially to this very fine detail. I acquired this piece along with one other closely related bracelet that contains a beautiful classic. Buddha's face carved out of a greenish hard stone, along with a closely related ring. Both are also listed on my website. All three are carved and finished to a very high standard. I was fortunate to be able to obtain these three in a trade with a long-time collector of Gandara and other early associated sculptures who also collected and wrote about antique opium weights from throughout southeast Asia and India. I traded him an entire collection of opium weights for these three pieces And feel grateful that I was able to do so. I wanted to purchase some of his other pieces, as he had packed away a number of fine authentic stone and bronze Gandharan pieces, but I could not negotiate down to an affordable price. I've never seen anything like them, especially in the quality of the sculpting and finishing. I've been reluctant to sell them as I find myself mesmerized (and attached) by them every time I study them. My commitment is to let go of everything 4" Wide, 2.625" the Opening of the Bracelet). Include the recently made museum-style display stand shown in the photos.
