2 Japanese Lacquer Boxes / Game Sets with Insert Boxes and Bone Tokens (Circa 1880 - 1930) - Bone, Lacquer, Bamboo - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

2 very beautiful and decorative Japanese game sets made of bamboo wood, Japanese lacquer, mother-of-pearl inlay and gold paint.

Made for the Chinese tea/gambling houses and export to the European market. Period circa 1880-1930 (Meiji-Taisho)

The game boxes each have 4 insert trays and offer space for the (present) bone chips and possibly for (not present) playing cards and dice. There are more than 100 bone chips in total.

The left box has mother of pearl inlay of, among other things, abalone and has 4 small inset boxes with paintings on the inside and outside.

The right box is painted with gold paint and has 4, slightly larger insert boxes. Everything is glossy black paint.

Very nice items for decoration, use or collection. Both boxes have been used and have damaged paint here and there (see photos) . However, the boxes still have a stable construction. No keys available.
