(2) Outstanding Musical Sigs! George Gershwin & Oscar Hammerstein
Signatures

A brace of 20th C. musical autographs including one from modern American composer George Gershwin (1898-1937), and one from American lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960). N.d., n.p. Individual condition issues will be elaborated below, else very good to near fine. The larger of the two autographs measures 6" x 4". Two pieces total. From the collection of Joseph "Bill" Kahn, Jr., assembled over more than seven decades and appearing at auction for the first time.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A paper slip pencil-signed and inscribed by Gershwin as: "Sincerely / George Gershwin." Expected wear including even toning, negligible pencil smudging outside the signature, and minor wrinkles. Laid down on a slightly larger black construction paper mount. The actual size of the paper slip is 4.75" x 2.5" while the mount measures 5.75" x 3" overall.

During Gershwin's short but brilliant career, he composed classical, musical, and "folk opera" oeuvres, including "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924), "An American in Paris" (1928), "Porgy and Bess" (1935), and Hollywood music scores.

2. A watermarked paper slip pencil-signed and inscribed by Hammerstein as: "For / Jeanne / with my best wishes - / Oscar Hammerstein." Flattened transmittal folds with isolated foxing and edge darkening. 6" x 4".

Oscar Hammerstein II dominated Broadway for almost 40 years, co-writing over 850 songs and winning 10 Tony and Academy Awards.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
