2 Roman Terracotta Oil Lamps - Flower & Medusa

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A nice set of 2 mold-formed terracotta oil lamps, each with a narrow base, a recessed tondo, and a protruding wick spout. The first lamp has a bulky body bearing a pair of ear-shaped lateral handles, spiraling tendrils just before the wick spout, and a raised floral pattern within the tondo. The larger lamp features a pierced handle, a stamped semicircular motif around the shoulder, and a stylized portrait of the gorgon Medusa within the tondo. Size of largest (Medusa): 3.625" L x 2.875" W x 1.6" H (9.2 cm x 7.3 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: Barakat Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Both pieces have abrasions, nicks, and encrustations commensurate with age, with softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to Medusa face within tondo of larger lamp. Old inventory labels beneath each base.
