2 Roman terra sigillata fragments depicting emperors
A pair of Roman terra sigillata pottery fragments, North Africa, c. AD 350 - 390, depicting the busts of Roman emperors. One shown within a medallion, facing front, the medallion to its left with the hind-quarters of a horse, 2 1/2 in x 2 1/8 in (6.3 x 5.4 cm). The other with the emperor in profile, with a small bust below, 2 7/8 in x 1 3/4 in (7.4 x 4.4 cm). Cf. Herrmann & Van Den Hoek, "Light in the Age of Augustine", pages 80-81, for type. Ex Clark collection, Santa Barbara, reputedly previously in the collection of Cornelius Vermeule.
