This 768 page work in two volumes was written by Robert Logan Jack, a Scottish-born geologist and explorer who made significant contributions to Australian geology including the mapping of several coalfields and the identification of numerous gold, silver and tin regions in Queensland. At the conclusion of his more than 40 years of study in the field, he published the present work that examines the previous 300 years of exploration on Cape York Peninsula. Text discusses the explorations of Tasman, Cook, Bligh, and Flinders, as well as a number of previously unpublished accounts including those of William Carron, William Hann, James Mulligan, and George Dalrymple to name a few. Includes 17 folding maps at the rear of volumes and numerous portraits throughout the text. Octavo, hardbound in green cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine.
Condition: A
Maps and plates are clean, bright, and near fine. Text is also near fine with some minor foxing to the title pages and table of contents. The front hinge of volume one is starting. Covers have light wear with bumped edges, and the dust jacket to volume two is missing.
