Chassis No. ZFFZS49A8Y0118721
“As with all great cars, there's no one facet that dominates the experience (with the 550 Maranello). Yes, the engine is mighty - but the chassis is its equal. There's never been a supercar that's so exploitable and so rounded in its abilities.”
-Evo Magazine, 2004
Incredibly, its new-for-1996 550 Maranello represented Ferrari's first front-engined, two-seat design for more than two decades; its spiritual antecedent, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, having ceased production in 1973. Powered by a 5.5-liter version of the 65-degree V12 motor first seen in the 456, the Maranello followed the classic Ferrari architecture of a steel spaceframe chassis, rear-mounted transaxle and svelte aluminum bodywork by Pininfarina. Offering spectacular near-200 mph capability and a sub-4.5 second 0-60 mph time the car has since joined the pantheon of Ferrari GT greats, alongside such standard-setting models as the 250GT, 275 GTB, 330 GTC, and the Daytona itself.
This stunning Maranello was originally sold by Ferrari of Beverly Hills, finished in the distinguished and rarely seen exterior hue of Rosso Fiorano. Complemented by Natural leather competition-style bucket seats, it was further configured with a quilted leather rear parcel shelf and Pirelli P-Zero-shod Speedline split-rim wheels. Delivered new to the Fleischman Collection 25 April 2000, remarkably it has remained with its original owner ever since and is distinguished as being the first car purchased by Bill Fleischman for the collection.
As with all cars in the Fleischman Collection, the 550 Maranello has always been well maintained; almost $26,000 being spent with Ferrari of Beverly Hills between the years of 2001 and 2010 alone. During this period, the car was routinely serviced, with additional remedial work being performed at the same time.
Since 2010, the car has covered less than 1,250 miles, with necessary maintenance work being entrusted to independent Ferrari specialists Foreign Sport Technician of Santa Monica, California. In August 2020, they conducted a major service, which included stripping, resurfacing, and reassembling the cylinder heads with new valve guides, as well as replacing all motor drive belts including the timing belt, as well as the front crankshaft oil seal. In addition, the fuel system was overhauled, and two new fuel pumps fitted; the total cost of this work amounting to $17,262. The 550 is offered today with its original window sticker, digital copies of its service records as well as a clean CARFAX report, in addition to its original factory manuals, document wallet, tool kit, flashlight, and two keys.
Although recent years have seen the Maranello assume its rightful position at the “top table” of Ferrari road cars, such new-found appreciation has, understandably, led to a wide divergence in values based on relative specification, provenance, mileage, and service history. With this in mind, few Maranellos excel on all counts more convincingly than the sumptuously specified, single-owner, 11,000 mile example offered here; a truly magnificent Ferrari Gran Turismo, and one worthy of inclusion in any serious Ferrari collector's garage.
