Pedro Couceiro, regular driver of this 911 GT3 Cup in the international 2001 Porsche Pirelli Supercup season, might be just the person to give Jonathan Goldsmith, better known as the Most Interesting Man in the World a run for his money. Born in Angola, his family moved to Portugal in the mid-1970s and once there he began a singing career, recording four solo albums in the early 1980s. At the same time, Couceiro followed his brother into karting. Quite successful, he followed the natural progression of Formula Ford, Formula Opel, and later F3 and F3000. While on his way through the single-seater ranks, he earned his Master's in Civil Engineering and in 1995 was appointed a national UNICEF Ambassador for Portugal. As if that wasn't enough, Jürgen Alzen Motorsport selected Couceiro as a driver for their three-car team to contest the 2001 Porsche Pirelli Supercup season. Why not? He probably wasn't busy.
The 2001 Supercup season was hotly contested as the first-generation 996 GT3 Cup car came into its own. Bergmeister, Werner, Ortelli, Maassen, Henzler, and Zampedri all had regular rides and raced at the front. Running with them was Couceiro qualifying 3rd at the A-1 Ring in Austria and finishing with his highest place of the season in 4th. The 61 points earned by Couceiro placed him in 9th without contesting the final three races of the season. Germans Richard Römer (Italy) and Frank Schmickle (USA Rounds 1 and 2) deputized for Couceiro and Jürgen Alzen Motorsport to close out the year. Like many Supercup chassis, this 911 GT3 Cup was sold after both Indianapolis rounds, and according to the accompanying paperwork found a home with Phil Koepke of Mequon, Wisconsin until at least the end of 2009. Over 44 pages of invoices from PMNA, Dawe's, and Arlan Motorsport are indicative of the maintenance that this GT3 Cup received over the eight years with Koepke. Sold around 2010 it began to receive parts and servicing from Daniel Jacobs LLC of Oxford, Connecticut through two different owners based in New York State and Connecticut with over 60 pages of invoices on file from their ownership.
Upon being acquired by its most recent private owner in 2018, a well-known owner of interesting Porsche race cars, this GT3 Cup again visited Daniel Jacobs LLC of Southbury, Connecticut in June 2019, in need of engine work. The engine was removed and sent to Autometrics in Charleston, South Carolina for a rebuild by Gordon Friedman that included the replacement of its pistons and cylinders, bearings, rod bolts, timing chains, intake, and exhaust valves, and valve springs along with hoses and ancillary items. Once returned to Daniel Jacobs it received a new clutch disc, pressure plate, intermediate plate, and clutch housing, among other typical reinstallation items like coolant, a fresh serpentine belt, and Pentosin hydraulic fluid at a total of $27,733. Later in October of 2019, likely without leaving Daniel Jacobs, a near $6,000 invoice details work to the transmission with a ring and pinion replacement as well as differential bearing replacement. Later work in April 2022 by the same shop details a 'whole car, pre-race' inspection with a subsequent oil change, transmission fluid, brake pad replacement with fresh fluid, axle replacement, and shifter work.
Clearly a well-maintained race car, these early 2000s 911 GT3 Cup are loved for their simplicity and support offered by Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA), specialty shops, and the band of amateur racers that pilot these across the country in much the same way that the pros did when they were new. Unlike many former race cars, this 911 GT3 Cup includes its original DMSB Wagenpass detailing the races run in support of the 2001 Formula One season across the globe. Additionally, it includes its 911 GT3 Cup Technical Information and spare parts manuals ensuring access to correct, factory-provided information.
