20032: Fr. 262 $5 1886 Silver Certificate PMG Gem Uncir

[ translate ]

Fr. 262 $5 1886 Silver Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The 1886 $5 silver certificate was intended as a memorial to President Ulysses Grant who had passed away on July 23, 1885. Collectors often remember this note for its back design, however, that quite appropriately depicts five Morgan silver dollars. The visually 'busy' back design reflected the prevailing philosophy at the time, that if every square inch of the note was filled with intricate engraving, it would be more difficult to counterfeit. This example has wonderful color, is printed on bright paper with clear square corners, and is well centered and margined. Tonight marks the first appearance of this Friedberg number in such remarkable condition in over five years. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
