Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ S. The $5 was the highest denomination issued from the popular Educational Series beginning in 1896. Its amazing face design was also a lightning rod for Victorian opinion on what was appropriate for bank note images. A scantily clad allegorical representation of Electricity Presenting Light to the World created quite a furor when the note was first issued. Portraits of Ulysses S. Grant and Civil War General Philip Sheridan appear on the back. Demand for this popular design always seems to be quite strong. This wonderfully detailed note has a way of revealing something new almost every time it is examined. It is beautifully printed on bright paper with excellent colors. Well centered and registered face to back, this example also has great original surfaces. All of this has combined to earn this note PMGs prestigious black star designation recognizing its exceptional visual appeal. A perfect note for even the most particular collector.
