Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate Face Proof (1895) Hessler SCE13 PMG Uncirculated 62. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing invested a lot of time and effort in the development of the Educational Series $5. A number of the major engravers had a hand in the conception and development of one of the most beautiful designs used on United States paper money. G.F.C. Smillie was the engraver of the design based on a painting by Walter Shirlaw with the border elements designed by Thomas F. Morris. This face Proof, pulled from the first plate, according to the printer's annotation that appears in the top margin, was deemed to be too dark, and was revised. This Proof dates to 1895, with that year showing as the series on the ribbon in the upper right corner of the design. It is on India paper mounted on cardstock and has a small tear in the top margin just to the left of the light bulb. An inherently unique item of immeasurable importance, this note will be a wonderful addition to any collection of Educational notes. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
