2005 Ann Chernow American Beauties Portfolio of Twelve Signed Prints
We offer the complete portfolio of 12 linocut prints by Ann Chernow titled American Beauties. All the prints are editioned, titled and signed in graphite along the lower margin. The title page reads: American Beauties, 12 linoleum cuts on Kitakata paper by Ann Chernow: Ava, Cassie, Elena, Elizabeth, Emmaline, Hannah, Lilah, Maya, Melissa, Mira, Natalie, Rose. The text on the last page reads: Edition 5/7, printed by Milestone Graphics in 2005. The images are 12" x 9" printed on 21" x 17" paper with full margins and presented in the original folder embellished with a linoleum cut red rose. Item #PR00375. American Beauties builds on Chernow s body of work of depicting iconic women, both real and imagined, that celebrates, provokes, and plays with the very idea of the leading lady. The contrast in the prints suits Chernow s cinematic references to film noir. Ann Chernow (née Levy, 1936) was born and raised in New York City. She studied art and music from a young age. Her early exposure to classic films made a lasting impression on her. She started her formal art education at Syracuse University before transferring to New York University where she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees. At NYU her instructors included: Howard Conant, Jules Olitski, Irving Sandler, Lawrence Alloway and Hale Woodruff. She also met her second husband, and fellow artistic patron, Burt Chernow. Burt was a professor at Housatonic Community College and the founder of the Housatonic Museum of Art. Ann developed her body of work in the 1980 s and 90 s around film noir leading ladies. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The National Academy of Design, Yale University Art Gallery, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The Oakland Museum of Art, The Toledo Museum, The San Diego Museum of Art, Library of Congress, and many other institutions worldwide. Chernow resides in Westport, Connecticut and remains in service of her community through the arts. Condition: Fine untouched condition.
