Présentée au public lors du Salon de Milan 1998, la F4 fait déjà partie des MV de légende. Dans un coup de génie publicitaire, l'usine annonça que, contrairement aux habitudes, la production commencerait par une série limitée de seulement 300 F4 très particulières, la 'Serie Oro', ou Série or. Sa fabrication démarra en douceur fin 1999, à raison de seulement trois par jour, dans la nouvelle usine de MV située à Cassinetta di Biandronno (province de Varese). Une fois le lot de Serie Oro achevé, l'usine se mit à produire en 2000 la version normale, la F4 S (Strada). La F4 fut conçue par le regretté Massimo Tamburini, père de la Ducati 916 ; son design inspiré surclasse tous les autres. Bien qu'elle ait désormais presque vingt ans, la F4 paraîtrait encore futuriste si on la lançait aujourd'hui. C'est le plus bel hommage qu'on puisse rendre au génie de Tamburini.
La F4 initiale continua à donner naissance à plusieurs modèles édités en série limitée, l'un des plus rares étant la Corse (Course). L'exemplaire proposé, un modèle 2004/2005, a été acheté neuf par son vendeur, qui ne l'a immatriculé qu'en 2006. Son compteur n'affiche que 6 km depuis l'origine.

In a publicity masterstroke, the factory announced that, most unusually, production would commence with a limited edition run of just 300 very special F4s: the 'Serie Oro' (Gold Series). Production, at the leisurely rate of just three machines per day, commenced late in 1999 at MV's new factory at Cassinetta di Biandronno, Varese. Once the batch of Serie Oro models had been completed, the factory commenced manufacture of the mainstream F4 S (Strada) in 2000. The F4 was designed by the late Massimo Tamburini, creator of the Ducati 916, and its inspired styling stands out above all else. Now almost 20 years old, the F4 would still look futuristic if it were released as a new model today; it is a most fitting tribute to Tamburini's genius.
The original F4 went on to spawn a host of special, limited edition models, one of the rarest being the Corse (Racing). A 2004/2005 model, the example offered here was bought new by the current vendor but not registered until 2006. The odometer reads only 6 kilometres from new.
