THE MOTORCYCLE OFFERED

"Motorcycle or sci-fi fantasy?" was how Bike magazine greeted the arrival of Honda's GL1000 Gold Wing super tourer back in 1976. Fantastic it may have been, but more than a quarter-century after its introduction the 'Wing is still going strong and enjoys a cult following world-wide. "Quite simply the most advanced motorcycle ever made," was Honda's preferred description, and given the mind-boggling specification - 1,000cc flat-four engine, water cooling, belt-driven overhead camshafts, shaft drive, triple disc brakes, etc - it was certainly complex if not, strictly speaking, that advanced. Nevertheless, the Gold Wing proved eminently capable of taking sales from both BMW and Harley-Davidson and looks set to remain a permanent feature of the Honda range. As owners began to fit more and more accessories - including trailers the size of small caravans - engine capacity was increased first to 1,100cc and then to 1,200cc to cope with the increasing demands for more power.

By 2007 when this example was built, the GL model offered an enlarged 1,832cc motor which could propel the majestic machine to 0-60mph in 4 seconds and continue to at outright top speed of 136mph, albeit that would have been quite a hair-raising experience! 5 color options were offered, this being finished in the Dark Blue Metallic option. Acquired at a public sale last year, the motorcycle had previously been resident in Louisiana.

At the time of writing it had covered some 30,000 miles, and shows well for its age with only light road rash on the left hand underside of the bike. A chance to experience the wind through your hair this summer and/or to dodge the traffic on the 95 with ease!
