Fr. 1214 $100 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. A simply gorgeous note that is one of only three Fr. 1214s graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG, this note is also one of only four such examples to make the 66 grade for all of the fourteen Friedberg numbers encompassing all Series 1882 $100 Gold Certificates. The gold overprint is vibrant, the red seal especially vivid, and the back an explosion of orange color set between four boardwalk margins. The Benton who appears on this note is Thomas Hart Benton, a Senator from Missouri and an extremely influential politician in his day. He was related to many other 19th century luminaries, including two Civil War Colonels, a Confederate Colonel from Mississippi and a Union Colonel from Iowa. He was the father-in-law of Presidential candidate John Frémont, and the great-uncle of Congressman Maecenas Benton who was the father of the famous artist Thomas Hart Benton. In our recent Long Beach auction, another example graded PCGS Gem New 66PPQ fetched a solid $25,200. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
