Fr. 2231-A $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. Tucked away in collections held for decades are incredible notes like this. Until now, this serial number had not been captured by census takers. It represents one of the most coveted pieces of collectible United States currency as the incredibly high face value precluded the setting aside of these $10,000 notes as souvenirs. According to the latest census, about a dozen Series 1928 notes and around 200 of the Series 1934 notes are known in all grades and districts combined for this denomination. Of that total, roughly half of the 1934 notes are from the New York district, thanks to the famous Binion hoard, with the remaining survivors scattered over the other eleven Federal Reserve districts. The quality of this offering from the Boston district is quite striking in all facets with fully original paper throughout as confirmed by the application of an "EPQ" designation from PMG. It is tied with just two other pieces as the finest graded by PMG for this series and district, only one of which has ever appeared at public sale. That lone appearance occurred five years ago when a note just two serial numbers removed from this offering realized $223,250 at auction. As notes of this quality are truly rare, expect some fierce competition for this small size trophy tonight. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
