20th C. Australian Wood Boomerang w/ Kangaroo Motif
**Originally Listed At $450**
Oceania, Australia, ca. mid-20th century CE. An attractive boomerang hand-carved from hardwood and painted with a wonderful kangaroo adorning the arch at the center of one side in red, black, and white pigments. Stylized grass-like motifs of the same color scheme embellish either end of this side of the boomerang as well. The gentle curve of such iconic airfoil weapons traditionally allowed them to be aimed and thrown with ease, and their stone-smoothed surfaces facilitates a rapid flight. The use of hunting boomerangs was described by the explorer Francis Barrallier in 1802, when he wrote that indigenous Aboriginal people throw it, "making it revolve on itself, and with such a velocity that one cannot see it … only the whizzing of it is heard." A beautiful example replete with fine craftsmanship. Size: 19.2" L x 2.625" W (48.8 cm x 6.7 cm)
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection
