20th C. Balinese Painted Wood Figural Wall Hangings (3)

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine set of three hand-carved wooden hanging wall decorations adorned with vibrant polychrome pigments and each bearing three mirrored glass discs within floral frameworks. First is a female with arms raised on either side of her eccentric headdress; second is a male with wide eyes and a slender mustache; and the largest is a female figure with arms lowered behind the central flower. These figures perhaps represent ceremonial dancers or religious figures based on their attire and colorful embellishments. Size of largest (female w/ lowered arms): 15.75" W x 12.4" H (40 cm x 31.5 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Repairs to two female pieces, with restoration and overpainting to area of upper periphery of one female piece, both with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; male piece is intact and very good. All have chipping to figures, peripheries, mirrored surfaces, and versos, with light fading to original pigment, and minor encrustations. Great remains of pigment across obverse surfaces.
