20th C. Chinese Incised Brass Dishes (4 pcs)
East Asia, China, Republic Period, ca. mid 20th century CE. A lovely set of 4 brass dishes presenting as 2 plates and 2 bowls, all featuring elaborate relief decorations. Both plates display an outer border of an abstract dragon motif surrounding a central tondo of a figure in their basins. The center of one plate exhibits the scene of a figure holding a sword in one hand, raising the other hand, and standing in a stream, while the other plate is adorned with the image of a figure running and holding a staff next to a fence. Alternatively, the bowls each display a hexagonal body sitting upon a discoid foot and are only decorated on their exteriors, yet feature similar motifs of figures amongst scenes of nature. The underside of each dish displays a series of Chinese characters that indicate that these dishes were made in the style of the 15th-century Ming Dynasty. Size of plate (both the same): 10.25" in diameter x 0.75" H (26 cm x 1.9 cm); Size of bowl (both the same): 7.125" W x 3.25" H (18.1 cm x 8.3 cm)
