20th C. Indonesian Java Painted Wood Mask - Monkey

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting a highly stylized monkey face with openwork circular eyes, a tapered nose with rounded nostrils, a delineated philtrum above thin, red-painted lips, yellow-painted eyebrows and mustache hairs, and an arching coiffure. The temples each have a drilled suspension hole, and the entire mask is covered in espresso-hued pigment. Masks like this example are oftentimes used by children during ceremonial dances. Size: 4.5" W x 5.1" H (11.4 cm x 13 cm); 8.2" H (20.8 cm) on included custom stand.
