20th C. Indonesian Toraja Ritual Sekomandi Cloth

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. late 20th century CE. A massive woven textile, made of two joined panels, with knotted fringe at its shorter sides. Its surface is decorated with black, beige, and pale red - once bright red - interlocking diamond patterns. This style of textile is known as a sekomandi and used to decorate houses during ceremonies to signify rituals had been performed or as a burial shroud. Size: 78" W x 54.5" H (198.1 cm x 138.4 cm)

Condition Report: A few small stains, notably in one corner and along the same side. Fabric is thick and in nice condition. Slight fading to color but the motifs are still very clear.
