20th C. Japanese Steel Abumi / Stirrup

East Asia, Japan, World War II period, ca. 1941 to 1945 CE. A wonderful example of a carbon-steel abumi (stirrup) cast in three parts that include a shallow foot well, a curved front panel with a protruding triple diamond motif, and a vertical strap body surmounted by a buckle loop. The surfaces of the stirrup are covered in a layer of jet-black pigment, and nice patina has formed throughout the equine accessory. Size: 11.25" L x 5" W x 9.3" H (28.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 23.6 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in October 2011; ex-private Florida, USA collection
