20th C. Japanese Wood Vase & Platform Sculpture
East Asia, Japan, Showa Period, ca. mid-20th century CE. A stunning wooden vase and platform. Hand-turned, the vase presents thick walls, an apple-shaped body and raised rim, all sitting upon a ring-form base. The vessel's silky-smooth surface exhibits a gorgeous natural wood grain in a hue of butterscotch with toffee-colored striations nicely complementing its elegant form. Alternatively, the heavy platform is mostly rectangular in shape, though has preserved a great deal of its natural form, the artist working with the knots of the wood to create a fascinating appearance. The gorgeous woodgrain of the platform boasts shades of caramel, chocolate, and mocha. Size (of vase): 9.5" in diameter x 9.5" H (24.1 cm x 24.1 cm); Size (of tray): 21.25" L x 10.75" W x 1.625" H (54 cm x 27.3 cm x 4.1 cm)
