LOT 0200

20th C. Lobi Wooden Bateba Phuwe Figure

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $200**

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden male figure with delineated legs, a distended abdomen, slender arms hanging next to the torso, and lightly-rounded shoulders. The enlarged head boasts cupped ears, bulging almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, and tab-shaped lips, all beneath a central hair crest. Given this figure's protective role, it was most likely placed on or around an altar as part of a group of various 'bateba' figures (literal translation of bateba phuwe is "normal/ordinary wooden carved figure"). The precise meaning of each figure's shape and posture is difficult to ascertain, since these carvings were created as the result of a seer's vision for an afflicted individual who was suffering a particular malady. Size: 4.5" W x 27.625" H (11.4 cm x 70.2 cm); 29.4" H (74.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.
