20th C. Navajo Silver & Turquoise Concha Belt

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. This is a stunning concha style belt made of 17 segments of sterling silver and turquoise! The 16 concha medallions and large buckle are strung on a leather belt strap and are ready to wear. The buckle has an articulating prong and rectangular opening that is flanked by 2 turquoise stones. The verso is stamped with the maker mark "J" and "STERLING." Each concho is rectangular in form, with a central raised sawtooth bezel containing a turquoise stone and radiating repousse petals. The exteriors of all are incised with arching linear lines and the verso has a copper loop welded on the back for the leather strap to pass through. Size of belt: 31" L x 1.5" W (78.7 cm x 3.8 cm); medallions: 1.5" L x 1" W (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 93% weight: 164.1 grams

Provenance: private Alamo , California, USA collection, before 2000

Condition Report: Medallions and buckles have darker toning and cleanable patina. All are intact and excellent. All pieces are strung on a leather belt strap and is wearable as is. Strap could be replaced easily if one wanted to adjust the length.
