20th C. Polynesian Wood Model - Outrigger Canoe

South Pacific / Polynesia, ca. mid 20th century CE. A handsome wooden model of an outrigger canoe. The body of the canoe is carved from a single piece of wood, with a single outrigger – the lateral support float – lashed to it via two poles and held in place with tied reed. A platform rests atop the canoe. The outrigger was an important technological development that enabled long distance travel across the Pacific. Size: 18.2" L x 15" W x 2.85" H (46.2 cm x 38.1 cm x 7.2 cm)
