20th C. Shipibo Glass Beaded Marriage Belts (2)

Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo-Konibo (also Shipibo-Conibo) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A pair of white-beaded belts, known as chinesheti or sometimes morochenesheti, each with dozens of strands of the tiny seed beads attached to leather and textile ties at the end. Both are heavy and cool to the touch, given they are comprised of glass beads. The Shipibo people adorn themselves with beadwork, and women wear belts like these for their weddings. The quantity of strings shows off her wealth. Size of one: 29" L (73.7 cm)
