20th C. Vietnamese Wood Staff - Writhing Dragon

Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Con Son Island, ca. mid 20th century. A skillfully carved and incised wooden staff in the form of a writhing dragon, the staff of a generally tapering form with a separately carved upper dragon head finial fitted to the lower section via an interior wooden dowel. The dragon's mouth is open revealing sharp fangs as well as a rattle ball. The length of the staff is extensively incised with fabulous details. Size: 20.75" L (52.7 cm)

Provenance: ex private Maui, Hawaii, USA collection

Condition Report: Loss to tip of dragon frill atop head. Minor loss to circular fittings between head finial and lower section. Scattered black pigment on surface. "Con Son VN" is incised and painted a lovely green hue on the neck.
