Two Sam McDowell Steel and Bone Scrimshaw Knives, Carmel , California, 1996-1998 Marks: SAM MCDOWELL, 1998/1996, "FRIENDLY ISLAND", FOR PUSSER'S, WEST INDIES 5-1/4 x 1-1/2 x 0-1/2 inches (13.3 x 3.8 x 1.3 cm) (larger) Property from the Estate of Kenneth Alan Hill, Sr., Fort Worth, Texas Note: Due to the Customs restrictions relating to some species of bone, international bidders may not have the lot shipped to them.The larger boatswain's knife with serrated blade, rigging awl and braided lanyard decorated with star banding and sailing and whale scrimshaw grip. The penknife with two blades, one with screwdriver tip, filigreed bolster and sailing and orca scrimshaw grip. The knives are designed by Sam McDowell and made exclusively for him in Seki City Japan by Kai Cutlery Company, descendants of Samurai sword makers. The knives have surgical stainless steel blades with brass liners and nickel silver repousse bolsters. The handles are made of polished and etched bone or Micarta. Sam McDowell's studio is in Carmel, California. A one-time art professor at Princeton, McDowell was introduced to the art of scrimshaw by then Senator John F. Kennedy in 1955. He is widely regarded among the premier American scrims handers, and is a Peabody Fellow. McDowell's work has been exhibited internationally.
