21K Gold Pendant w/ Roman Stone Intaglio
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous necklace featuring an ancient Roman stone intaglio of an oval form and skillfully carved with a profiled figure striding toward the left. The figure wears flowing vestments, and holds a club or staff over the shoulder. Finely carved from a stone of peachy beige hues, the details are impressive, with copious drapery folds and a wonderful sense of movment. The intaglio is 'framed' by a 21K gold setting that presents marvelous granulated border with a lovely decorated loop as well. Size: intaglio in setting measures .875" L x .75" W (2.2 cm x 1.9 cm)+ 17" L (43.2 cm) leather cord. Gold quality: 89%, equivalent to 21 karat.
Provenance: ex-Bassem Elias collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; stone intaglio purchased in the UK in the 1990s
