The memorial is based on the famous photograph captured by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945, in which Corporal Harlon Block, Corporal Harold Keller, Private First Class Franklin Sousley, Sergeant Michael Strank, Private First Class Harold Schultz, and Private First Class Ira Hayes raised the American flag over Iwo Jima to boost morale in the midst of the profound devastation of World War II.
