3 Fine Roman Pottery Oil Lamps

Roman, possibly Holy Land region, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A handsome trio of pottery oil lamps, mold-made to each present an extending wick spout, a large, annular fill hole, relief decoration, and a projecting handle at the back. The first 2 exhibit ring-form bases and flat shoulders adorned with abstract motifs. Though both handles feature the image of a face, 1 is tab-shaped while the other is cruciform. Sitting upon a flat base, the remaining vessel showcases a round shoulder embellished by zoomorphic relief decoration and a cross-shaped handle with geometric designs. Size of largest (lamp with tab-shaped handle): 3.9" L x 2.7" W x 1.8" H (9.9 cm x 6.9 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
