From the estate of Andrew Stout III. Few have done more to try to resurrect the Atlantic Salmon run of the Connecticut river and its tributaries than Andy Stout. Andrew ( Andy ) Varick Stout III passed away in 2023 at the age of 92. Andy was born in New York and is a descendant of of the Dominick, Bayard and Varick families - for whom Manhattan streets are named. A graduate of Westminster School, Yale University and the University of New Hampshire. A Naval officer ( Quartermaster ) during the Korean War, he was assigned to the Destroyer DD643 USS Sigourney. After the war and upon graduating from Yale, Andrew worked for the family investment banking firm Dominick and Dominick on Wall Street for fourteen years. After working for Dominick and Dominick ( Founded in 1899) , Andy was appointed by Wilfred Carter to be the assistant executive director of The Atlantic Salmon Federation ( U.S.) An avid, lifelong fly fisherman, Andy first learned the sport from his Dad at The Elite Laurentian Club of Canada ( Founded in 1886) which his family founded along with other prominent New York families . In 1973 Andrew moved his family to New Hampshire to pursue his passion: the restoration of Atlantic Salmon to their native rivers in the Northeast. He worked as the New England Coordinator for the International Atlantic Salmon Federation from 1981 to 1986. Andy subsequently founded one of its affiliate groups, The New England International Salmon Association , which held important conferences spearheaded by Andy as its President. Upon his retirement, Andrew helped create the Norcross Wildlife Foundation/A.V. Stout Fund, a research grant program that supported New England wildlife and habitat located in western Massachusetts and beyond.
