3 Roman Bronze & Leaded Bronze Rings w/ Incised Motifs

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A trio of bronze and leaded-bronze rings cast with narrow bands and engraved with motifs on their faces. The first ring has a flattened band with a slightly raised circular face engraved with a diamond shape that represents a woman's vagina. While seemingly crass today, genitalia imagery was a popular talisman for fertility. The next is a ring has a broad-shouldered shank, and a slightly protruding face that is engraved, but the marks are faint, perhaps the owner's initials or mark. The last ring is a narrow band with a rounded disc and several incised lines like decorative veining of a leaf. Size of vagina ring: 0.75" Diameter x 0.25" W (1.9 cm x 0.6 cm); US ring size: 6; broad shank ring: 0.85" Diameter x 0.25" W (2.2 cm x 0.6 cm); US ring size. 3.75; leaf ring: 0.75" Diameter x 0.4" W (1.9 cm x 1 cm); US ring size: 5

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

#165324
Condition Report: Softening of face and motif is indiscernible on the broad shanked ring. The other rings' motifs are visible with some softening of incised lines. All ring bands are intact and could be worn. Please note all have thick patina, which may affect wearing, including flaking or chipping of patina.
