4 Achaemenid & Greek Terracotta Figural Fragments

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE; Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE. A lovely ensemble of 4 pottery figural fragments: 2 Achaemenid male heads, 1 Achaemenid female body, and 1 Greek head. Capped with floppy hats, the Achaemenid male heads both exhibit almond-shaped eyes beneath arched brows, prominent noses, closed mouths, short beards, and slender moustaches. Next, the Achaemenid female body is shown seated and boasting an hourglass form with wide hips, pointed breasts and elaborate adornments, including beaded strands that cross her body with a circular pendant at the center and a serpentine thigh band. Last, the Greek head presents generously lidded eyes, a broad nose, and gently parted lips, all supported by an elegantly long neck. Size (of largest): 3.5" L x 1.6" W x 3" H (8.9 cm x 4.1 cm x 7.6 cm)

The elegant visage is topped with a thick, wavy coiffure and an elaborate wreath featuring fruits and a bucranium, suggesting that this may be the head of Dionysus -Roman Bacchus - the god of wine, fertility, vegetation, and resurrection who had strong ties to bull symbolism.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany.
