4 BRONZE WEIGHTS CHINA HAN DYNASTY
Dimensions: Height 4 cm Wide 5 cm Depth 5 cm each
Weight: 785 grams all
A group of four Chinese Han-dynasty bronze weights, each cast in the form of a compact crouching animal resting upon a rounded base. The small sculptures display individual variations in their heads, bodies and projecting features, while their balanced proportions reflect the practical requirements of weights used in measurement.
Centuries of oxidation have produced richly textured green and brown patinas that bring out the recessed modelling. Animal-shaped bronze weights form a fascinating category within Han-period material culture, bringing craftsmanship and decorative symbolism to everyday commercial objects. Presented together, these four pieces make an attractive and coherent ensemble of early Chinese bronze miniatures.
