LOT 0042

4 Medieval / Post European Iron Riding Stirrups

[ translate ]

Western Europe, Medieval to Post Medieval Period, ca. 11th to 16th century CE. A group of 4 stirrups - a matched pair and 2 single stirrups - that are all wrought iron. The matched pair have broad foot tread plate set upon a triangular frame, the upper tip surmounted by a bulbous finial and a rectangle suspension loop set perpendicular to the rest of the stirrup. The others have a more rounded form - one with a pear shape and flat foot tread plate, and the other is circular with a rectangular suspension perforation through the center apex - this form likely from the post Medieval era. A rich layer of a dark patina coats the surface of all four. Stirrups stabilized riders and gave them more balance, helping them remain in the saddle while riding. Size (triangular stirrups): 5" L x 2.25" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 5.7 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

#159839
