4 Northwest Coast First Nations Polychrome Carved Wood Raven Rattles

[ translate ]

A collection of four hand-carved and polychrome painted wooden rattles, characteristic of Northwest Coast indigenous traditions, specifically the Tlingit, Haida, or Tsimshian nations. Three rattles follow the traditional raven rattle form, used historically by chiefs and shamans. These examples feature the diagnostic iconography of a raven carrying a reclining human figure on its back, whose tongue is joined with a frog, symbolizing the transfer of spiritual power. The carvings include inlaid abalone shell for eyes and joints, and one raven is detailed with a bone or ivory beak. The fourth rattle is a stylized, flat-profile bird form featuring bold formline designs in black, red, and teal. Construction involves deep relief carving and surface incising, with handles finished in plain wood, leather wrapping, or dark pigment. The collection reflects varying degrees of complexity in the formline style common to the Pacific Northwest region. Unsigned. Largest: 3 1/2" H x 14" W x 7" D. Location: 13C

Condition Report:
The collection shows varying degrees of surface wear consistent with handling. There are minor surface scuffs and small losses to the polychrome finish across all four items. One rattle exhibits a small, irregular crack in the wood on the belly section. The leather wrapping on one handle shows light fraying at the terminals. Bone or ivory inlay remains secure.
