40012: Etched Model 1840 Cavalry Officer's Sword Attrib

Etched Model 1840 Cavalry Officer's Sword Attributed to Civil War General Franz Sigel. 35-inch curved blade, elaborately etched blade with with battle scenes, US, eagle and military motifs. 28-inch fuller. Scroll and floral engraved brass handguard and Phrygian helmet pommel embossed with oak and laurel leaf patterns. Wire wrapped sharkskin handle. Brass scabbard with two mounting rings, traces of gilt finish and engraved with an eagle and Union scroll. Note: This sword was offered and sold at Cowan's sale [Lot 202] in 2016 with the following statement: "Oral tradition provided by the consignor attributes this sword to Civil War Union General Franz Sigel. However, the sword is not inscribed to him and does not include any corroborating documentation." We are offering this sword with the same understanding, as no provenance or history came with it.
