Schuyler, Hartley & Graham U.S. Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword and Epaulettes. Blade length 31-inches, 35-inches overall. Blade acid-etched with a Schuyler Hartley & Graham New-York makers mark on the obverse side of the blade with additional foliate decoration and "M.S." initials. Obverse side of blade with extensive acid-etched foliate decoration. Gilded hilt ornately decorated with oak leaf and acorn motif and American eagle with a pommel shaped like a pineapple. Gilded metal scabbard with ornate high-relief decorated ring mounts and drag. Included with the medical officer's sword is a matched pair of Medical Service epaulettes with brass crescents retaining 95% of the original gilt, two rows of bullion fringe, one 3/8-inches diameter, the other .25-inches in diameter. Red morocco undersides with gilded hooks stamped "Horstmann Brothers & Allien, New York" for attachment to the uniform. Each epaulette has affixed inside the brass crescent a 1.25 x 3-inch bullion pad with silver bullion old English "MS" inside gilt bullion wreath. Both epaulettes utilize a small eagle button. Condition: The sword is in excellent condition. The epaulettes likewise, though the left example has a small tear in the red velvet underside.
