40023: George A. Hayes Presentation Sword. Model 1860

George A. Hayes Presentation Sword. Model 1860 Field and Staff Officer's sword engraved PRESENTD TO 1ST SERGT. GEORGE A. HAYES BY THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF COMBAT TRAIN C 212th C.A.A.C. JUNE 21st, 1932. The sword has an engraved makers mark of Ridabock & Co. N.Y. and has a Germany-marked blade. Note: The June 21, 1932 date of the presentation was during the Bonus March when on June 17, veterans of World War I marched on Washington demanding immediate payment of "bonus", which was promised to them by the federal government during the war. On July 28 the March was dispersed by regular armed forces, and their camp destroyed. George A. Hayes was a sergeant in the 212th Coastal Artillery [Coastal Anti-Aircraft Artillery Corp] of the New York National Guard. In 1941 he was in Battery E and received the Long And Faithful Service Decoration (for 15 years service). Condition: Good. Showing scattered signs of handling wear and patches of pitting.
