Native American Used U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Single Shot Rifle. Serial no. worn, .45-70 caliber, 22-inch barrel with fixed front sight and rear folding ladder sight. Blued finish. Lock marked: (eagle) and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD. Smooth walnut straight stock. Metal carbine butt with cleaning rod reservoir. Together with letter from R. Stephen Dorsey, Staff Editor of the Gun Report dated 23 March 1987, describing the classic Indian features that make this gun a "Classic, Indian-used Trapdoor Carbine." Mr. Dorsey also points out, "I have absolutely NO question in my mind that it is a real Indian-used Trapdoor Carbine and would be happy to have it back at any time in the future" Highlights include the obliterated serial number, cut-off saddle ring bar, lost or removal of rear sight slide, etc. Another piece of documentation comes from David Condon dated 10-9-08 on his invoice paperwork detailing and highlighting the trapdoor and notes on it. Note: an old tag is included in the lot which Mr. Dorsey states in his 1987 letter, "What makes it particularly nice is the old tag on it, giving it some provenance." Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with noticeable signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Scattered dings and scuffs present to wood. Large cracks around action and triggerguard.
