Governor John Endecott Document Signed "Jo: Endecott Gov." One page of vellum, 20.5" x 12", Massachusetts; May 1660. An indenture made on September 29, 1659 between James Baron of Woodbourn and E. Pead of Bolton. With a red wax seal at the lower margin. Docketing on verso. Included with the document is a lithograph of Endecott. John Endecott (ca. 1588-1665) was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Company. He led a group of about one hundred Puritan settlers in 1628 from England and settled north of Plymouth Colony in what would later be Salem, Massachusetts. A strict Puritan noted for his suppression of religious dissent, he served several separate terms as governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony (1629-1630, 1644, 1649, 1651-1653, 1655-1664). Condition: Uneven edges. Heavy foxing and moderate toning and dampstaining. Flattened folds, with additional creasing to the paper around the seal. A few small holes at the folds.
