47002: William Penn Partial Document Signed "WM Penn."

[ translate ]

William Penn Partial Document Signed "WM Penn." Single sheet, 9.25" x 7", September [blank], 1689; no place [England]. Penn signs as "Proprietary of the Province of Pennsilvania [sic] and Counties annexed". Although a large portion of the left side of the document is missing, it can be determined that Penn requests that three candidates be presented to him as potential contenders for his Deputy or Lieutenant Governor. Docketing on verso reads: "a draught of a Commission – to impower the Councel [sic] to choose his Govenr." Penn was the founder and proprietor of Pennsylvania, a colony settled by Quakers, whose tolerance set an important precedent. Penn remained in the colony less than two years, departing in August 1684 to return to England to address a dispute with Lord Baltimore. He spent another two years in Pennsylvania in 1699-1701. Condition: A large area of the lower left corner is missing and the document has been professionally repaired with additional paper. This affects a significant part of the text. Chipping to the edges and corners. Tears and separations have also been repaired professionally on verso. Flattened folds. Light soiling and foxing.
