Sam Houston Autograph Letter Signed "Sam Houston." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Nashville, Tennessee; July 26, 1824. Addressed to J.L. Edwards Esq., regarding a pension inquiry from a Mr. Samuel Davis. The letter reads, in full: "Mr Saml Davis of this county has this moment called on me and states that on the 18th of May last he forwarded to the Pension Department of declaration of his property shewing that he is entitled to a Pension and that he has rec'd no return in answer to his application. Will you be so good as to reply to said application, and if the Pension shows not to be granted, shewing the reasons why. Address your letter to Mr. D. Barrow or to Mr. Davis." Sam Houston (1793-1863), the hero of the Texas Revolution, a veteran of the War of 1812, is the only man to serve as governor of two different states, Tennessee (1827-1829) and Texas (1859-1861), and the only one to serve as a foreign head of state (he twice served as president of the Republic of Texas, 1836-1838 and 1841-1844). In addition to his time as a U.S. Senator, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Tennessee (1823-1827). Condition: Flattened mail folds and toning at the edges. Minor soiling. There is a small amount of paper loss at the lower left corner. On verso is a light or faded typed note that reads, "Presented to Thomas F. Turner, President [illegible] Historical Society. July 26, 1924." Small pinpoint holes in places. Adhesive residue on verso, along with professional repairs at the folds with archival material.
