[Samuel Augustus Mitchell.] Map of the State of Texas from the Latest Authorities by J. H. Young. Philadelphia: Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler, 1854. Hand-colored folding map, 16" x 13". "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1850, by Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. in the Clerks office of the District court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania." With two maps inset, "Northern Texas on the same scale as the larger map" and "Map of the Vicinity of the Galveston City." The map shows Texas' only railroad at the time, the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado, which opened near Houston in 1853. Also included is the proposed route for the Atlantic and Pacific Rail Road. The map is separated from but includes the original gilt-stamped leather-bound boards, measuring 3.25" x 5". Text on the front pastedown of the boards and on the map provides population figures of Texas in 1850. Condition: Flattened folds with weakness and separations and paper loss at folds. A hole has been repaired with archival material. The map has been backed with archival paper to support separations. Light toning and soiling throughout map. Minor warping to the paper.
