Charles Cornwallis Autograph Letter Signed "Cornwallis." Two pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.25", Calcutta; October 16, 1792. A letter addressed to Lord Sydney, regarding recent troubles in Europe related to the War of the First Coalition. It reads in part: "The scene is much changed in Europe since you wrote to me on the 5th of April, a war upon the Continent French General butchered and wasted, and what is still worse associaters and reformers in England. I see the names of Colonel Ironside, and some other notorious Indian characters in the list. These Gentlemen would have done more good to their country if they had begun a reform in their own conduct some years before they embarked from here. I trust however that the general prosperity of our affairs will prevent the extreme of mischief, and that La Lanterne will not be established in London. I am truly glad to hear so pleasing an account of your family, and shall ever be deeply interested in everything that affects your happiness. Present my kindest compts to Lady Sydney..." It was under Cornwallis' command that the British forces surrendered to Washington at Yorktown. After returning to England, he was appointed governor-general and commander in chief in India in 1789. His service in India did much to restore his reputation and he was awarded the title of Marquis in 1792. Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light toning and foxing throughout. Minor soiling on verso at folds. Boldly signed. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
