Robert Anderson Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a profile bust portrait in uniform, with an unidentified stamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Robert Anderson May 26/64. BvGen U.S.A." Robert Anderson (1805-1871) is best known as the Union commander who surrendered Fort Sumter to Southerners following their bombardment of the South Carolinian fort in April 1861. Anderson's defense of the fort made him a national hero, and he was promoted to brigadier general. He then set about aiding with recruitment and toured the country for a period of time before briefly becoming the commanding officer at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island in 1863. Anderson officially retired from the Army on October 27, 1863. Condition: Light edge toning and soiling. Minor paper loss and adhesive residue at the top on verso.
