Jefferson Davis Autograph Letter Signed "Jefferson Davis." One page, 4.75" x 7.75", Beauvoir, Mississippi; August 4, 1887. A letter addressed to Mr. R.H. Foster, requesting that he purchase a gun for him. It reads in full: "We have cause to be on guard against burglars, and someone has taken away my revolver. I want another, but not at full price. Would you oblige me by looking at some forfeited pledges and select for me a pistol of the best pattern and send it to me with ammunition to suit." Beneath the letter is an additional note, New Orleans; February 28, 1891, from Foster to Claude M. Tilford. He forwards Davis’ letter on as a souvenir, writing: "I present this autographic letter of our beloved President, Statesman and Patriot, with the wish that you may preserve it in kind remembrance of the author and your friend." After the war, Davis was briefly imprisoned, but was pardoned and released in early 1869. He spent some time in England, before returning to settle in Tennessee. During 1887, he toured around the South, attending numerous Lost Cause ceremonies. He died two years after this letter was sent after falling ill during a trip. Condition: Flattened mail folds with light toning and soiling at the edges. Writing in another hand in blue ink on verso. Boldly signed by Davis.
